A love letter to Brixton.
This piece is about returning to Brixton, remembering Brixton, and becoming part of its next chapter.
I first lived in Brixton between the ages of 12 and 14. I still remember arriving somewhere in London where I saw so many Black people, so much Black culture and such a strong sense of community. It felt like I had found my tribe.
Coming back decades later, Brixton has changed, but that energy is still here. Its Caribbean heritage, music, creativity, independent businesses and extraordinary diversity still shape every street, and the buzz you feel stepping out of Brixton Station is unlike anywhere else in London.
The artwork brings together places that hold both personal and collective memory: Electric Avenue, Market Row, Brixton Village, the Ritzy, Coldharbour Lane, Railton Road and Brixton Station, alongside music, fashion and Black culture. The small Buy Back Brixton flag is a nod to the next chapter, and to the conversation around ownership, protecting independent businesses and investing back into the community.
Since opening in Market Row, the people and businesses around me have become a community I now call family. This is the place I remember, the place I have returned to, and the place that, after all these years, still feels like home.
